Taking the long-term view of schizophrenia treatment from first diagnosis

Professor Christoph Correll discussed at ECNP  the need for a holistic, long-term view of treatment for a patient with schizophrenia from first diagnosis. He chatted about involving the patient in treatment decisions and ascertaining what is most important to them with regards to symptom and functionality goals, then finding the right medication to help a patient achieve this. A lack of illness insight and negative symptoms may be problematic when it comes to treating a patient. Motivational interviewing around life engagement goals and creating a therapeutic relationship may help engage and educate them regarding the best means to achieve symptom stability.
